Expanded Vision
Photographer, climber, and guidebook author Nikki Smith captures jaw-dropping outdoor images with a focus on people
who have not been represented in these scenes in the past.
NIKKI SMITH IS ONE OF CLIMBING'S GREATEST
resources. A photographer, artist, writer, and
guidebook author based in Salt Lake City, Utah,
she started climbing in the early 1990s and
has been working in the outdoor industry and
climbing world since 1998. With more than 150
first ascents to her name, she's authored five
climbing guidebooks to date (with a few more
on the way) and is sponsored by brands including REI, Scarpa, Mountain Hardwear, and
Bronwen Jewelry. An advocate for the LGBTQIA2S+ community, and a board member for the
Access Fund, her current work prioritizes trying
to build a more inclusive, diverse, and safe community within climbing and the outdoors.
"I've been trying to focus my photography on
people who haven't traditionally been shown in
the outdoors-trans, LGBTQIA2S+, and BIPOC
(Black, indigenous, and people of color) folks,"
says Smith. "I didn't see myself represented in

climbing and the outdoors and want to try to
change that for others. I've also been working
on some illustrations recently since I've been
sticking close to home and haven't been as active
with a camera lately."
