I want you to see our jubilation, not just our rage. We
wouldn't have these emotions if we didn't care deeply
about this industry. We are
more than the human rights
moment in which we find
ourselves. We are deep, and
our interests are vast. We
find ourselves in this space
because it enchants us,
challenges us, grants us reprieve. We have dreams and
experience joy in urban and
rural recreational spaces
just like everybody else.
Every single person in
this issue is talented and
worthy of your attention.
Hire them, and pay them
in professional monetary
rates-not just in gear.
These folx are experts in
their fields and love talking about
more than just the DEI work to
which they are often assigned.
They love to crush it, send it, and
shatter the limitations put before
them-just like y'all do. At this
magazine, we pay each of them
a competitive, professional rate
on par with any contributor. This
isn't a one-time thing. You will see
these contributors, as well as new
ones, sprinkled throughout every
issue. There is no diversity story
here-we are part of the main
narrative of the outdoors. If seeing
this many Black creatives taking
up space bothers you, I want you
to ask yourself why.
Onward. There is much work
to do.

IT'S BEEN OVER A MONTH SINCE

#BlackoutTuesday, and it's time
to talk about the next steps in
making the outdoor industry a
vibrant, equitable place centered
on justice.
Tolerance for the voices and
ideas of BIPOC folx should be
the least we can expect from this
industry-that is doing the bare
minimum.
The future of this industry lies
in these pages.
These creatives belong inhouse, in your campaigns, on
your boards-but only if you'll
truly value them and are willing to process what they have to
say. Representation matters, but
it is just the beginning. Without
listening to these voices and putting BIPOC people in positions of
power, the result is tokenization,
the straw man of diversity. We are
here to do more than just meet a
requirement so you can check off
the box on an application.
