Fletcher Street"

"SKIN, TEXTURE, TRAUMA, PEACE, LOVE AND COMMUNITY." THESE
are the words Kennedi Carter uses to describe the underexplored aspects of
Black experience. Her subjects expose themselves and find the center of the
Durham, North Carolina-based photographer's lens. While Carter's fashion
photography work focuses on reimagining Black models in high-art moments,
she also tends to focus her lens on Black horsemen in urban areas. "I went to
Philadelphia and met up with the Fletcher Street riders, a stable on Fletcher
Street in downtown Philly," Carter says. "It's in a dangerous area, but the
stable is a zone of peace and safety. Everyone has to leave their beefs outside
when they enter."

At these city stables, many of the kids ride a horse for the first time, and they
are drawn into an outdoor world that seems, at first, to be incompatible with
the beliefs about their neighborhood and their experiences in it. "They are creating a safe space in the community where kids can learn to ride and take care
of the horses," says Carter. "The Fletcher Street riders ride around the city, and
they even bought some land, a green field that was made into a pasture."
During the pandemic, Carter has not strayed much from the subjects at
hand, and she is using the current moment to reflect-and plan." I try to shoot
