The Numbers
There are 90 years and
plenty of differences
between those Fall Classic
cancellations. In 1904, the
New York Giants refused
to play the championship
because of a feud between
their management and that
of the upstart American
League. (The Giants' owner
saw the AL-25 years the
National League's junior-
as a "minor league.") They
resolved their differences
by the next year, and the
tradition continued until
1994, when baseball commissioner Bud Selig called
off the series on account of
a player strike. Thankfully,
cancellations are harder
to come by today. "There's
more of an alignment of
interests between players
and owners than ever
before," says John Thorn,
the official historian of the
MLB. So, for now, play ball!
The World
Series
has been
canceled
2
times.
