Wise Guide Q+A Amateur Hour Set in your ways? Don't be. Leadership pro Liz Wiseman says we can learn a lot from the office newbie. Why should you think like a rookie? "The workplace is entirely different than it was 20 years ago," Wiseman says. "Experienced professionals may rightly wonder if their knowledge and skills are becoming obsolete. The answer is to take a cue from rookie colleagues by staying fresh and continuing to learn." What's the best way to stay fresh? "Lighten your load. Just like we periodically rid our houses of things we no longer need, we should do the same intellectually. Take stock of the assumptions you hold about work, review them, and look for evidence to the contrary. Then dump the beliefs that no longer apply." Liz Wiseman is the author of Rookie Smarts: Why Learning Beats Knowing in the New Game of Work. ILLUSTRATION BY CLEAR AS MUD What else can I do? "At the beginning of your next project, take some time to listen and learn. Once you see what needs to be done, jump in quickly. Think of it like double Dutch jump rope. First, study the rhythm, and watch for an opening. Then jump in fast, and keep your feet moving." But what if I get into unknown territory? "You'll need to improvise. Let the problem pull you beyond your job description and across organizational boundaries. Chances are you and your team will be able to draw interesting and unexpected conclusions." What's the best way to maintain this mindset? "Instead of hanging out with seasoned pros, seek out the interns and the upand-comers. Watch what they're doing, and soak up their energy and aspiration. You just might be reminded of what it's like to be fearless." NOVEMBER 2014 SOUTHWEST 47
