The Numbers
On New
Year's Eve,
3,000

pounds of
confetti
is dropped
on Tımes
Square.
And all of it is tossed by hand.
Stationed in nine buildings
throughout the square, the
crew of 80-plus confetti
dispersal engineers unleash
the tissue-paper blizzard
precisely 20 seconds before
12 a.m. "We do so because
the live feeds from around
the world tune in right at
midnight, and we want them
to see the ball and lots of
confetti," says Treb Heining,
who has orchestrated the
confetti drop since NYE '93.
Once airborne, the featherlight pieces stay aloft for up
to 20 minutes. An uplifting
start to the year, indeed.
