Helping with a
Servant’s Heart
How one San Antonio Employee puts her passion
for community service into action.

As a Bilingual Team Leader in the San
Antonio Customer Support & Services (CS&S)
Center, I have been a part of the Southwest
Airlines Family for 11 years. I have the privilege of leading our Customer Representatives,
who deliver our Legendary Customer Service
and Southwest hospitality. I am fortunate to
have Coworkers who see the importance of
wearing their Servant’s Hearts on their sleeves
and giving back to our communities.
Southwest is an airline, but we do some
of our best work on the ground. I know this
personally, as I am empowered to give back
to my community not only through my own
passion for volunteering but also through
Southwest-sponsored service efforts.
On a regular basis, Southwest and AirTran
Employees join together to make a difference.
Our airline has always stood for community,
and our nationwide projects show that every
year. This past fall, for example, Employees
supported local food banks during National
Preparedness Month by volunteering and by
collecting and donating canned goods.
In addition to projects like this, I spend
time giving back at the Ronald McDonald
House of San Antonio. Often, I am able to
provide something that few volunteers can:
bilingualism and knowledge of Hispanic culture. Spanish-speaking parents can sometimes
feel uncomfortable because of their lack of
English fluency, so my goal is to use Spanish
to put them at ease while they stay at the house
and deal with their children’s illnesses. I vividly
remember the first time I helped at a Ronald
McDonald House event. I can still picture the
face of a sweet child who had been involved
in a horrific car accident. Getting to know this
little boy and his family helped reaffirm my
commitment to volunteering.
My job as a CS&S Team Leader keeps me
busy, but that doesn’t stop me from volunteering. You cannot put a price tag on the feelings
and experiences that come with making a
positive difference in your community. I’m so
fortunate to work for a Company that supports
my passion. —Carolina Mendoza
