Spirit Magazine - May 2013 - (Page 22)

Your Words Dear Spirit, When I pulled out the March issue and saw your cover story on El Sistema [“If You Know Four Notes…”], I grinned from ear to ear! As a musician and the editor of the student newspaper at the New England Conservatory of Music, I recently published a story about our Sistema Fellows, 10 NEC student leaders who embarked on a four-week journey to Venezuela to live the teachings of Sistema and spread them throughout the U.S. upon their return. In the words of Sistema fellow Monique Van Willingh, “Give a child music and you give them hope.” Thank you for spreading that hope at 10,000 feet, where it can continue to soar. As a musician, I was thrilled to see two great music articles in a wholly enjoyable issue. The kids of YOLA [“If You Know Four Notes...”] are positively inspiring, and the superb story about using music to enhance life and memory in a nursing home [“How Sweet the Sound”] was equally exciting to read—two stages of life, two wonderful programs. Thanks so much. Although I fly Southwest because it gets me to places I want to go for less, sometimes I think I really do it for the opportunity to get a paper copy of Spirit! —S H A R O N M C K I N L E Y COLUMBIA, MARYLAND What a great way to put it, Sharon. Keep flying for that second reason! PERFECTLY ORCHESTRATED As the father of a future orchestra teacher (a music education senior at the University of North Texas in Denton), it was a pleasant surprise to see your March cover photo in my seat pocket on a recent flight. The story [“If You Know Four Notes…”] behind the cover gives readers a sense as to why young people like my son are so dedicated to becoming orchestra teachers. Thank you for a great article. —T E D TA L L E Y BENTONVILLE, ARKANSAS Be sure to let us know when your son gets that teaching job, Ted. We’d love to attend his first concert.
