Brattleboro, Vermont, is staking its claim as the bull-running capital of New England—as long as you’ll allow us to use the term running loosely. There are real benefits to choosing Brattleboro’s event over its Spanish cousin. For one, there’s little personal risk in watching the heifer contingent—up to 100 strong—amble through this laidback Vermont town. Once they’ve passed, their farm friends follow: You’ll see horses, mules, oxen, goats, pigs, llamas, and alpacas making their way down the parade route alongside decorated tractors, loopy clowns, elaborate floats, and marching bands. The weekend is about more than the novelty of watching livestock march down Main Street, though. The real purpose of this gathering is to celebrate farmers and local foods. This summit of slow-smoked goodness takes place in and around Madison Square Park and features pitmasters from barbecue capitals around the nation, including Texas, Alabama, and North Carolina.
