Community Outreach string song SWA supports groups like the Saratoga Springs Youth Orchestra. Tickets for Time PhotograPhy By ann norsworthy-rigley Complimentary airfare in exchange for volunteer hours makes for a winning equation. My love affair with aviation began when I was a child. As the daughter of an Air Force pilot, I moved every two years. Although these changes were often tumultuous, my love of airplanes and flying became a source of stability in my life. Now that I have spent 35 years as a Flight Attendant, my passion has blossomed into a LUV affair with Southwest Airlines. Volunteering has always been a natural course of action for Southwest Employees because we believe in service, not only when we’re at work but also when we’re off the clock. Southwest believes in doing the right thing, and it always comes from the heart. To pay tribute to its Employee volunteers and to further demonstrate the Airline’s commitment to the communities it serves, Southwest created the Tickets for Time program. For every 40 hours Employees spend volunteering with a qualifying nonprofit, that organization receives one complimentary, roundtrip ticket to use for transportation or fundraising needs. I spend most of my off time volunteering at the Saratoga Springs Youth Orchestra in Saratoga Springs, New York. Founded in the late 1990s, the orchestra welcomes young musicians from all over the region and allows them to pursue their love for the arts. I get to help them in their mission by maintaining their computer databases, sending out marketing e-mails, and working as the orchestra’s webmaster. I look forward to contributing my time and energy each week. In fact, I have donated nearly 200 hours of volunteer time to the orchestra, and through this they have benefited from Southwest’s generous Tickets for Time program. Ultimately, what makes Tickets for Time so valuable is the fact that it connects Southwest with nonprofit groups in communities the airline serves. As Employees, we are ambassadors of Living the Southwest Way, proudly spreading the word that ours is a Company that cares. Southwest embraces giving back, and, through my experiences at the orchestra, I have indeed felt my Servant’s Heart beat stronger. There is no sound in the world like music from our student musicians, and I am blessed to have the opportunity to experience it. I thank Southwest for empowering me to help the orchestra and for giving me the 35-year ride of my life. —Mary Longobardi JUne 2013 spirit 153
