HATS OFF The First Tee and Southwest This nonprofit helps young golfers grow. As “The Official Airline of Golf Lovers,” Southwest Airlines LUVs making golfers’ dreams come true—particularly when those golfers are young people. That’s why we are proud to be the Official Airline of the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, one of the most popular regularseason events on the Champions Tour. The tournament, which is internationally televised on the Golf Channel, takes place September 27–29 and is played in Carmel, California, at Del Monte Country Club and the world-famous Pebble Beach Golf Links. This competition’s unique format pairs 81 Champions Tour regulars (like World Golf Hall of Famers Bernhard Langer, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, and Hale Irwin) with 81 junior golfers from 132 SPIRIT SEPTEMBER 2013 The First Tee chapters across the country. The First Tee is a youth development organization that provides educational programs for kids and teens (ages 5–17) that build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices, using the game of golf as a teaching platform. Independent research on The First Tee shows the longer participants stay involved, the more their confidence grows, both academically and socially. It’s truly a dream come true for these young men and women to play with Champions Tour greats. Southwest is proud to be a part of making this oncein-a-lifetime opportunity possible by providing transportation for The First Tee participants, many of whom do not have the financial means to travel to the event. Since it was founded in 1997, The First Tee has reached more than 7.6 million young people in five countries. With the goal of reaching an additional 10 million young people by 2017, The First Tee hopes to help these junior golfers become responsible young adults.
