Rapid Rewards Freedom Story Treg Charlton + ON THE JOB Now that he's retired, Treg works to promote awareness for ALS. 18 SPIRIT FEBRUARY 2014 Even though Treg Charlton now lives in Cleveland, he has an equally strong connection to another Southwest Airlines destination: Kansas City, Missouri. In fact, Treg feels that the Southwest Employees in both his former and current hometown are "like family" to him, given his many years of flying out of each of those locations. As the recently retired regional director of real estate for CVS Pharmacy, Treg spent much of his career traveling extensively on Southwest to find new store locations for the nationwide pharmacy company. Treg's Freedom Story began in 2002, and he has been an A-List Preferred Member of Southwest's Rapid Rewards Frequent Flyer program for so long that he jokingly calls himself "Mr. A16." He credits Southwest's convenient schedule to cities in his territory with helping him achieve his "best years ever." Treg also LUVs that two checked bags can fly free. But he says his top reasons for making Southwest his airline of choice are the fact that "Southwest has the best Crews anywhere" and that he always gets "service with a smile." In 2010, Treg started what he calls his "second job" as the co-spokesperson for CVS's annual campaign to raise funds for ALS research. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease) is a relatively rare progressive neurodegenerative disease that has no known cure. Treg was diagnosed with ALS in March 2010 and has been a passionate advocate for ALS awareness since then, helping to raise more than $5 million in 2012 for research for a cure. "For some reason, I still have my voice," he says. "I think the message was for me to use it." Although his ALS is progressing, Treg remains optimistic and always looks for ways to count his blessings. Right now, his future plans include using his Companion Pass, along with the many Rapid Rewards Points he's accrued, to spoil his wife, Dianne, and daughters, Audrey and Mia, by traveling to some of the places on their wish lists. One trip he especially looks forward to is a beach getaway to Cancún (via a shared itinerary on Southwest and subsidiary AirTran Airways). Treg, you're our kind of Customer.
