HELPING HAND S + Community Outreach SWA aided tornado relief effor ts in Oklahoma. Rebuilding and Renewing Relief organization All Hands empowers post-disaster communities. To me, community in its purest form is people helping people. As the founder of the nonprofit organization All Hands, I believe there is a certain strength that comes when people believe they are part of something bigger than themselves; community is best when we are working together toward a common goal. All Hands is dedicated to empowering volunteers and providing hands-on assistance to communities around the world in the aftermath of natural disasters. When such catastrophes occur, our goal is to provide sustainable support to the communities by harnessing the energy and commitment of volunteers. We can't predict when a natural disaster will occur, but we can equip and organize our volunteers so they're effective when the time comes. In June 2013, Southwest Airlines and All Hands partnered to provide relief in Moore, Oklahoma, where an EF4 tornado caused nearly $2 billion worth of damage. More than 150 Southwest Employees joined All Hands to help the community recover. Thanks to travel provided by Southwest, we were able to mobilize more than a dozen All Hands staffers and volunteer leaders to respond to this disaster. Since 2010, Southwest has supported All Hands with cash donations and free airline travel. These tickets give us both flexibility and the ability to respond rapidly when we need to get to the site of an unexpected catastrophe. I'm often asked to name my favorite out of all the places I have served. Having traveled all over the U.S. and internationally (to Haiti, the Philippines, and Japan) to provide relief, it would be impossible for me to say which has had the greatest impact on me. But I can say that what I LUV most is the community we create when our volunteers join hands with locals in a united effort to rebuild. Our teams have served in Ofunato, Japan, following the earthquake and tsunami of 2011; we helped rebuild Biloxi, Mississippi, after Hurricane Katrina; and we're ready for the next community that needs us. No matter what the disaster or when it hits, there is nothing more valuable we can offer to these devastated locales than this hope: a chance at a new community.
