Community Outreach Leaning on LUV Employees help each other through an internal fund. Employees in need. Payroll donations are the most popular way to give, but our Employees constantly surprise us by organizing fundraising events that bring in additional money. What started as a word-of-mouth movement has grown into a fund that's helped more than 2,800 Employees and distributed more than $11.5 million in aid. Through my work for SWAECAC, I'm privileged to see the impact of our Employees' compassion and generosity. Whether it's providing a hotel room for an Employee whose home has burned to the ground or helping fund a lifesaving treatment for a newborn, these donations truly make a difference when it's needed most. And every day, I'm fortunate to hear the thanks of those who are on the receiving end of their fellow Employees' generosity. At Southwest, we're blessed to share our workspaces with People we LUV: our wonderful Coworkers. -Chris Shumate + From the cockpits of our Boeing 737s to our Governmental Affairs office in the nation's capital, workspaces at Southwest Airlines vary widely, but they all have one thing in common: our amazing Employees, who are the heart and soul of the Company. Though we are spread across the country, we're always united through our Warrior Spirits, FUN-LUVing Attitudes, and Servants' Hearts. Southwest is more than a Company; we're a Family. After many years as an Employee, I'm still touched by the level of compassion and camaraderie we share. One way we demonstrate our bond is through the Southwest Airlines Employees Catastrophic Assistance Charity (SWAECAC), which I help administrate. This charitable fund began with a simple mission: to help Employees going through severe financial hardships brought on by catastrophic events. What makes the charity truly special is that our Employees themselves are the source of the funding. Every Southwest Employee has the option to donate $1 to $50 from each paycheck to help other Charity at Work SWA Employee Dawn Foster was devastated when she found out that her daughter, Natalie Treviño (pictured far left at age 2 and left at age 17), had osteosarcoma in her left foot. After the diagnosis, Dawn learned that SWAECAC would pay her insurance premiums while she took time off to care for her daughter. Natalie has now been cancer-free for 12 years. "I don't know what we would have done without SWA," Dawn says. JUNE 2014 SPIRIT 127
