All rights reserved. Smelly stuff often gets a bad rap, but it's time for a fresh take. join hardrockrewards.com Dear Reader, Smell is the most underrated sense. After all, seers use their second sight, judges give hearings, athletes have the right touch, and collectors show good taste. But tell someone she smells, and I doubt she will take it as much of a compliment. I believe this is blatant smellism, an unwarranted prejudice against our own olfactory awesomeness. For proof, consider the ant. Following chemicals in its environment as direct orders, it creates whole armies, even entire cities. Chemicals excite the creature, calm it down, tell it to feed the queen, defend the nest, or hit the road. We're not as far from the ant as we like to believe. As Annie Monjar reports on page 64, our smell receptors are closely tied to the most primitive parts of our brain: the areas having to do with emotion and memory. The chemicals around us-wafting from cafés, carrying the ocean to the shore, bearing the joy of a wet dog-are giving us virtual commands. If we encourage the relict ant in us, we may find a richer life in these orders. Jumping off a dock into my favorite lake in New Hampshire, I sense algae, water lilies, fish, and mud, an elixir that carries the command, Be a boy again. The mountain that overlooks this lake bears the scent of sun-warmed lichen on granite, and the smell says, Be here when the blueberries ripen on the ledges. On page 56, we suggest two dozen ways to follow your nose, obeying the commands of smell. Call it travel aromatherapy. Please don't sniff at the concept; I promise it will bring you to your senses-all of them. And, even better, it just might bring you back in time. -Jay Heinrichs Editorial Director PHOTOGRAPHY BY GETTY IMAGES/JOEL SARTORE United States Atlanta Atlantic City Baltimore Biloxi Boston Chicago Cleveland Dallas Denver Destin Detroit Four Winds Foxwoods Gatlinburg Hollywood, CA on Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood, CA at Universal CityWalk Hollywood, FL Honolulu Houston Indianapolis Key West Lake Tahoe Las Vegas Las Vegas at Hard Rock Hotel Louisville Maui Memphis Miami Myrtle Beach Nashville New Orleans New York Niagara Falls Northfield Park Orlando Philadelphia Phoenix Pittsburgh San Antonio San Diego San Francisco Seattle St. Louis Tampa Washington, DC Yankee Stadium MAKES SENSE http://www.HARDROCK.COM http://www.HARDROCK.COM http://www.hardrockrewards.com
