On page 66, Brad Herzog writes about one-hit wonders-singular feats by people who never followed up with a sequel. So what does a woman with a degenerative retinal disease have to do with, among others, the guy who photographed the Wright brothers' first flight? Both took what they were given and found glory-one through personal tragedy, the other through a stroke of luck. I believe you and I can become one-hit wonders as well, by seeking glory intentionally. Pursue a great feat, an unprecedented one that amazes you. Last year I went after my own one-hit wonder by attempting to "run my age" up New Hampshire's 4,802-foot Mount Moosilauke. That meant I had to reach the summit in fewer minutes than my age in years. I knew of only a dozen people who had succeeded, none of them over the age of 50. (Of course, very few had been odd enough to try.) After training for nine months and losing 28 pounds, I broke the age barrier on my 58th birthday. Geezer glory. No plaque will ever be installed in my honor, mind you. Still, for the rest of my life I can bask in my one wondrous personal hit. What would yours be? Personally, I found that the accomplishment itself was less glorious than the wisdom I picked up along the way from books, experts, and my own mistakes. I learned powerful lessons about motivation and physiology. And about myself. Which brings me to the lifechanging part.
