Rapid Rewards Freedom Story + Harvey & Joanne Caras P O R T S T. L U C I E , FLO R I DA A trip to Jerusalem changed Joanne Caras forever and sent her and her husband, fellow Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Member Harvey Caras, on a mission that has raised more than $1 million for charities worldwide. It all began in 2005, when Joanne and her children volunteered at a pay-what-you-can restaurant in Jerusalem run by the nonprofit Carmei Ha'ir, which means "all who are hungry shall eat." Carmei Ha'ir serves as many as 600 meals each day, mostly to those experiencing difficult life situations, including homelessness and financial troubles. Inspired by Joanne's experience, the couple published the Holocaust Survivor Cookbook a Cookbook, collection of miraculous Holocaust survivor stories, recipes, and photos. They have since released a second book, Miracles & Meals, and , have given all proceeds from the sales of both volumes to charity. This labor of LUV has soared beyond anything Harvey and Joanne had ever dreamed, and Southwest has been beside them the entire way. To support the book, Joanne and Harvey embarked on a 50-city speaking tour-and truly fell in LUV with Southwest on the way. "We are so grateful to Southwest for connecting us to communities across the country," Joanne says. "We feel like we are part of the Southwest Family." The couple now has more than 275 speaking engagements under their belts, and traveling Southwest-with benefits like Bags Fly Free, No Change Fees, and the Companion Pass-has helped keep their expenses low, meaning more money can be given to nonprofits. "If a new stop is added in the middle of our book tour, we LUV that there isn't an additional fee when we make flight changes," Harvey says.
