"By producing content
through a variety of
forums, like blogging
and public speaking,
you're creating what
I call an 'expert platform,'" Jantsch says.
"Whether you're selfemployed or part of a
company, your goal is
to find a way to differentiate yourself from
the competition."

"Ask yourself, 'What
questions do my coworkers and clients
ask me?' It's helpful to
home in on a specific
topic within your
field-something
you've developed a
knack for."

"For years, I produced
a newsletter where
I ran abstracts from
my blog posts as well
as ones from the 100
blogs I subscribe
to. I got a lot of good
feedback on that approach, and it's one
you can use in an
email or as part of a
weekly roundup on
a blog. Think about
where the people
you want to influence
spend their time.
That's where you'll
make the greatest
impact."
What if I don't get
any followers?
"The goal is to build
a lasting body of
work that supports
your reputation as
an expert. You want
to come up in search
results, not get 10,000
Facebook likes."
How do I make
time for this?
"You simply have to
recognize the value
and make it a priority.
You're building a career asset in the same
way some people earn
their master's degree
at night. You won't see
the effects instantly,
but it's going to help
you in the long run."
