By Brion O’Connor ★ photos by Liz Mackney When I moved to Boston’s North Shore almost 30 years ago, I heard talk about residents of Cape Ann who never left. They entered the world at Addison Gilbert Hospital, and many later departed from there, spending their entire lives on this picturesque granite thumb that juts into the Atlantic Ocean without once venturing over the Annisquam River to the mainland. I figured the story to be mostly urban legend. “Oh, no, it’s true,” a salty bartender told me over a cold beverage at the Crow’s Nest, long before Sebastian Junger’s The Perfect Storm made this Gloucester joint a must-see attraction. “Think about it; why would anyone want to leave?” Good question. East of the Annisquam, Cape Ann is made up of Rockport — a town best known for high-quality granite, the arts, and a stubborn, long-time adherence to Prohibition — and the nation’s oldest seaport, Gloucester. Combined, they offer an abundance of natural and man-made riches, enough to nurture mind, body, and soul from cradle to grave. But ignoring the outlying towns of Essex, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Ipswich that make up the commonwealth’s “other” cape would be a regrettable oversight.
