engage Giving Miles for good Pulling TogeTher This month, thousands of US Airways employees are raising money for United Way. By tara titcombe ★ August is an exciting time for US Airways employees. And there’s a Charlotte puller shows off his muscles nothing like a little rivalry to get things started. The company’s Jet Pull event not only promotes friendly competition, but also raises thousands of dollars. Jet Pulls are hosted at US Airways hubs in Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Phoenix. Employees in each of the hubs create teams of 20 and pay a fee to enter. The goal? To pull a 50-ton Airbus A319 15 feet faster than any other team. The prize? Bragging rights for the rest of the year. Last year, 109 teams participated and collectively raised more than $26,000 for United Way. The system-wide winners, Jet A Power from Philadelphia, pulled the jet across the finish line in just 4.79 seconds. It was an impressive start to the monthlong campaign, which raised a total of $1.45 million, exceeding the company’s goal of $1.4 million. “The money raised during the Jet Pulls and throughout our campaign goes to help our neighbors, family members, and fellow coworkers who have found themselves in need,” said Doug Parker, CEO of US Airways, at last year’s Phoenix Jet Pull. “As an airline, we have a responsibility to serve our community beyond operating flights. It’s our responsibility, each and every one of us, to help support and care for those in need so that we can ensure a bright future for everyone.” This year, US Airways hopes to set the bar even higher.
