Get it While it’s HOT! Discover Seattle’s outdoor delights during its brief, glorious, and yes, sunny summer. By David Hanson | Photos by Michael Hanson N o one else I know has fallen in love with a city because of a diving board. The food, the architecture, the landscape, the music, the shopping, the glitz and glam — sure. Those are reasons to explain a favorite city. Not a diving board. But that’s what I always come back to when talking about why I love my hometown of Seattle. From July to September the city steps out of its gray, misting, 45-degree (Fahrenheit) shadow and 36 august 2013 usairwaysmag.com emerges like Cinderella into a sunny, 80-degree paradise of lakes, beaches, trails, mountains, and city parks. And kids and carefree adults fling themselves off diving boards into a cool lake that sits in a glacier-carved basin surrounded by a metropolis. I’d been to Seattle many times before I found the boards. I’d even lived there for six months shortly after college in 2001. By 2009 I had moved back to the “Emerald City” from Atlanta, and that summer was one of the hottest on record for Seattle.
