Staffing the SKIES Scheduling crews for every flight can be a challenge for even the best puzzle solvers. By Tara Titcombe | Photos by David Aschkenas A plane is only as useful as the crew that flies it, and behind that crew are the crew schedulers. Stationed at US Airways’ Operations Control Center in Pittsburgh, this group ensures there are flight attendants and pilots staffed for every flight, every day. The Task at Hand The schedulers are divided into three main groups: 42 AUGUST 2013 future, daily, and systems. The future schedulers look one or two days in advance to schedule crews, while the daily and system schedulers are concerned only with the current day’s flights. “Our main job and goal is to make sure there is a qualified crew that is well rested for every flight,” says Steve Holliday, manager of crew resources. It’s a job that can be more difficult than it sounds. “We require at least six weeks of training because our schedulers need to learn the computer system and they need to be briefed on FARs [Federal Aviation Regulations] as well as our pilots’ and flight attendants’ contracts,” Holliday says. For example, a pilot or flight attendant may only be certified for a specific aircraft type.
