Diversions explore Pursuits of Pleasure The Sky's The Limit Been there, done that? Maybe it's time to take a more universal approach to your next getaway. By Lynn Gianiny ★ Deciding where to take a vacation can be a challenge. The usual choices of beaches, mountains, and islands are always enticing, but why not try something truly heavenly? Stargazing destinations around the world have become increasingly popular for those looking to get away from it all. Whether you choose an astronomical event, an observatory, or just a room with a view, stargazing locales offer a rich variety of stunning landscapes and vistas. A trip centered around the night sky might just eclipse your previous getaways. Cherry Springs State Park Susquehannock State Forest, Pennsylvania PHOTO BY P. MARENFELD & NOAO/AURA/NSF Dark, remote, and untouched, Cherry Springs State Park has long been heaven for the starstruck. Located atop a 2,300-foot mountain, the park affords brilliant views at both the Night Sky Viewing area and the Astronomy Observation Field, which offers a 360-degree panorama. The Astronomy Observation Field is for overnight visitors only ($13 a night). The Night Sky Viewing area is for short-term viewing and is free. This is a drive-up and hike-to kind of adventure, so bring the right clothing and gear: binoculars, your own telescope, lawn chairs, and blankets. The park is known for its excellent view of the Milky Way. Educational programs are offered to keep you informed of astronomical events. And the park's 48 acres include trails for day hiking and backpacking before settling in for a starry, starry night. Star trails over Kitt Peak Observatory Visitor Center, Tucson. Lowell Observatory Flagstaff, Arizona For 117 years, the Lowell Observatory's Alvin Clark Telescope has been hailed as an icon of American astronomy. Also referred to as the "people's telescope," the Clark has new companions with the Pluto Discovery Telescope and the recently completed Discovery Channel Telescope. AUGUST 2014 23
