Charlotte, North Carolina, offers such hope to people living with ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neurological disease that eventually causes paralysis and limits the ability to swallow, speak, or breathe. The city is home to both The Joe Martin ALS Foundation and the Carolinas Neuromuscular/ ALS/MDA Center, part of Carolinas HealthCare System's Neurosciences Institute. Formed by the family of former North Carolina Governor James G. Martin, whose brother Joe lived with ALS, the foundation provides free home care services and support to patients, including transportation to the ALS/MDA Center. The center opened in 1998 thanks to an endowment created in part by the Martins. Working in close cooperation, these two organizations provide ALS patients and their families with a single, connected network on which they can rely for support and therapies that help manage the effects of the disease. For example, The Joe Martin ALS Foundation offers loaner wheelchairs, assistive devices, respite care for family members, and - most importantly - gets to know each patient's unique situation and needs.
