explore The Arts You Are Invited Meet Mary at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. For millennia, she has been one of the most popular subjects in Western art. More than 60 beautiful depictions of Mary - many never before seen in the United States - have traveled from the Vatican Museums, the Louvre in Paris, and the Uffizi in Florence, among others, to their temporary home in Washington, DC, at the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA). On view December 5 through April 12, the exhibition Picturing Mary: Woman, Mother, Idea offers a rare opportunity to encounter Mary as she was envisioned by truly great Renaissance and Baroque artists. This spectacular, ecumenical exhibition will only appear at NMWA. Through paintings, sculptures, and textiles, Picturing Mary explores the concept of womanhood represented by the Virgin Mary, as well as the social and sacred functions her image has served. This exhibition offers insight into the manner in which both female and male artists conceptualized their images of Mary.
