beST Of eDuCaTION A Riding Lessons Miller School of Albemarle teaches with horses. t Miller School of Albemarle, high school equestrians come face-to-muzzle with 1,000-pound animals. These girls and boys get to know their horses by grooming and tacking up their mounts; they memorize the intricate parts of the saddle and bridle; and on horseback, they practice the basics. Then they practice some more. Sound difficult? It is. And the kids can’t get enough. Miller School, a 180-student coeducational college preparatory boarding school outside of Charlottesville, Virginia, offers a hunt-seat equestrian program deep in the heart of horse country. “The students february 2013 look forward to getting to the barn,” says Elizabeth Brann, the equestrian team coach and director of academics. “When the kids are with the horses, they open up.” After starting a school service project with a local therapeuticriding organization, Brann saw a bond between horse and rider that she wanted in the Miller School of Albemarle athletics program. Today, she sees her team act with that same care, attention, and teamwork — and with the school’s commitment to “Mind, Hands, and Heart.” Out of the saddle, Brann integrates an educational component into each riding season, inviting equine enthusiasts to speak to the students. “There is such a wide horse world out there, we want to use all the resources available,” Brann says. Miller also uses all of the resources available at home, including a beautiful 1,600-acre campus. The school recently opened the campus to local fox-hunting groups; some students will be able to participate. “In most sports, the players are the only variables,” Brann says. “Things like the hoop, the sidelines, the goal posts, are set. In riding, the horse presents another variable — a really big one.” Miller trains MSa equestrian Team its students to 1000 Samuel Miller meet these, along Loop, Charlottesville, with life’s other Va 22903 434.823.4805 surprises. millerschool.org 106 usairwaysmag.com http://www.millerschool.org http://www.millerschool.org http://www.usairwaysmag.com
