US Airways - February 2013 - (Page 50)

Open your tray table and prepare to swirl, sniff, and sip. C 50 february 2013 heers! US Airways has restocked its galleys with award-winning wines from Argentina, Chile, Italy, Spain, and other notable wine regions. But before any wine is poured in your glass, the airline samples and scrutinizes it in a procedure that’s as complex as a Bordeaux’s bouquet. The Picking Process “We work with Intervine, an international winemanagement company,” explains Russ Brown, director of inflight product, planning, and ment for US Airways. The airline sets guidelines and expectations — including price, volume needed, and number of varieties — for the onboard wines. Intervine, based in Napa, then uses these guidelines to select samples for the airline. “We evaluate over two hundred wines for every US Airways cycle,” says Ed Matovcik, president of Intervine. “Our tasting panel of wine experts is joined by a seasoned team of international buyers and operations professionals.”
