GREAT TASTES HOME Cooking Urban restaurants in Phoenix give new meaning to 'front of the house.' By Martha-Page Althaus 52 FEBRUARY 2014 ★ Phoenix is a big city - the sixth largest in the United States, actually. There's a busy downtown, with skyscrapers and all the bustle you'd expect of any major metropolis. But the city's dining scene is a far cry from all that. Instead, you'll find a surprising number of locally owned restaurants located in renovated historic homes. These places are cozy and casual, with tables tucked into intimate rooms, and most of them have charming back patios. From Japanese to Italian, there's something to suit all tastes. Bungalow Dining James Beard Award-winning Chef Nobuo Fukuda leads the kitchen at Nobuo at Teeter House (, located in a 19th-century bungalow in downtown's Heritage Square. The restaurant doubles as a refined Asian teahouse by day, and as an izakaya (tavern) by night. No matter the hour, Nobuo is one of the city's best restaurants.
