embark From the Editor The Story Behind the Stories Relief, at Last # A great heap of information overload is at last behind us. In the past few months we’ve been inundated with political campaign ads quickly followed by nonstop Christmas shopping promotions. As we now turn the calendar, January spells r-e-l-i-e-f. As some have observed, there’s a bit of irony in our collective psyche at this time of year. We welcome the fade of the holiday hubbub — and at the same time suffer a kind of postpartum sadness. The crescendo of excitement comes to an abrupt halt on January 2. A welcome antidote for the postholiday blues is a change of venue — speciﬁcally, a warm, relaxed place. And that’s exactly what we had in mind by choosing our January cover story. We sent a writer, photographer, By Lance Elko and our design director to Aruba to capture the essence of this tiny island. If you can’t visit — and by all means you should — the next best thing is to make a vicarious trip by turning to page 42. On a ﬁnal note, a surprising number of you wrote in about the missing sudokus in a recent issue. One reader opined, “Whether an unwise experiment or a misguided editorial choice, I appeal to you in the strongest terms possible: Bring sudoku back. . . .” Two points on the sudoku hiatus: First, a late-arriving ad forced us to juggle a fair amount of content, and our only option was to abandon the sudokus for that issue.
