embark From the Editor the story behind the stories Much to See ★ This issue marks a record of sorts for this publication. At 208 pages, it’s the largest magazine we’ve produced since September 2007. The size has a great deal to do with three destination features that explore locales we’re now prompted to visit or revisit. (One of these, Philadelphia, is my hometown, but so much has changed since my college years that I’m now planning a summer trip to see what I’ve been missing.) For our cover story, we asked one of our top travel writers, David Hanson, to cover Baja California. David and his first-rate photographer brother Michael have, over recent years, spent a lot of time in Baja, and they took a four-week road trip this past winter to deliver an insider’s look. It starts on page 38. by Lance elko Our Philadelphia feature focuses on the arts and culture of the city. Many of you will be surprised to learn that Philly boasts more public art than any other U.S. city, is home to the nation’s oldest natural history museum, was named America’s Best City for Culture by Travel + Leisure in 2011, and, cheesesteaks notwithstanding, was cited as “the most underrated American food town” by Saveur. Coverage begins on page 100. Not to show a Yankee bias, we also celebrate Columbia, South Carolina, in this issue. The state capital, dubbed the “new Southern hot spot,” has made a remarkable transformation by revitalizing the downtown and the historic riverfront district. Read about it starting on page 56. cover photo by michael hanson coVer: balandra bay, near La Paz in baja california sur. the bay is the site of prized beaches, great snorkeling, and a plethora of marine life. what’s even better: no crowds. see the full story on page 38.
