engage Giving Miles for Good TEAM TRIP American employees take the trip of a lifetime - and delivery of a new plane. By Tara Titcombe ★ PHOTO (TOP) COURTESY OF AIRBUS AND EMPLOYEE PORTRAITS BY VALERIE STUNJA Each year, American Airlines holds its Airbus Auction, which allows employees to bid for a coveted spot on a five-day trip to Toulouse, France. The cherry on top? A return flight on a brand-new Airbus aircraft reserved just for the employees. This year, 396 employees bid a total of more than $55,000 for the trip. All proceeds are split between the American Airlines and American Eagle Family Fund, which provides assistance to former and active employees, and the US Airways Education Foundation, which provides scholarships and grants to nonprofit organizations for children's educational programs. The winners included 30 employees, and each one had a unique take on the trip. Tony Casablanca, an international cargo agent who emigrated from Mexico City at a young age, had never traveled on his new passport. "This trip was priceless, incredible, majestic, and such a great experience," he says. "Let me tell you that my travel life has changed for good and forever. I don't really know how to explain this, but this was the trip of my life." For Ronald Granat, an aviation maintenance technician, the trip was an aviation dream come true. "The hook for me to go on this trip was naturally the delivery flight of a factory-fresh A330 from Europe," he explains. "I grew up in Long Island and knew at the age of twelve I wanted to work on and around airplanes." After some time away from the industry, Granat found a job with American. "I was hired in 1997, and here we are 17 years later." And for Kerry Martensen, a customer service agent, the trip was about connecting with fellow employees. "Having this experience just clarifies that an airline is only as good as the family that runs it - from the people who make the reservation, sell the ticket, board the plane, serve onboard, fly the plane, fix the plane, stock the plane, and the list goes on," she says. "We are a small slice of the many faces that take such pride and ownership in our work at American Airlines."
