BETTER, STRONGER, FASTER A Charlotte USA manufacturer gives everyone from NASCAR drivers to Olympic champions a high-speed boost. By Sam Boykin ★ While the Winter Olympics ended only four months ago, Hans deBot already has his sights set on 2018. deBot is not an athlete but rather the owner of deBotech Inc., which played an unlikely role in the record-setting victories of the men's and women's U.S. bobsled teams in Sochi, Russia, last February. An experienced mechanical engineer, deBot launched deBotech out of his Cornelius, North Carolina, garage, where he developed strong and lightweight carbon-fiber parts for the NASCAR industry. deBot's operation eventually caught the attention of folks like Olympic bobsled athlete Bruce Roselli and former NASCAR driver and bobsled builder Geoff Bodine. Soon deBotech was off and running - or sliding - into Olympic bobsled racing. He partnered with Bodine to build a four-man sled and worked with BMW North America to develop a fleet of two-man sleds and small one-man "skeletons" that helped the U.S. win a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics and six medals at the 2014 Games. deBot now runs his operation From top: U.S. bobsled team competing at the World Cup Tour, Winterberg, Germany; qualifying race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Concord, NC 72 JUNE 2014 FOR MORE ABOUT THE CHARLOTTE REGION, GO TO CHARLOTTEUSA.COM.
