San Luis Obispo, California — or SLO as locals call this Central Coast jewel with a relaxed vibe — has added its first modern boutique hotel to an enviable list of attractions that includes wineries, beaches, and mountains; scads of recreational diversions; a Mediterranean climate; and upscale shopping and dining. The Granada is a showcase of industrial-chic architecture, mixing vintage and contemporary features such as exposed brick walls, handcrafted steel windows, and restored hardwood floors. A personal touch: Works by local artists adorn guest rooms and public spaces. “It’s great to finally be able to sit down and enjoy it,” says the owner, Kimberly Walker, who spent 18 months renovating the building, doing much of the design work herself.
