Baker skips the amenities and draws those who just want some great skiing. by David Hanson I know we’re on the right road. There’s only one showing on the GPS map. It runs east from the coastal town of Bellingham in the far northwest corner of Washington State. It snakes through a sea of green and ends in a fistful of snowcapped mountains. But the curves keep twisting upward, and I begin to feel a bit disconcerted about the fact that I’m driving up a 56-mile dead end. The road is Highway 542. Bumper stickers on many Bellingham cars (especially roof-racked ★ Subarus and small pickups, circa 1990s) read, “Go East, 542.” Mt. Baker Ski Resort is the last stop on the highway, the pot at the end of the proverbial rainbow in Washington’s northernmost Cascade Mountains. And it is full of snow — the most snow, on average, of any ski resort in the country. In 1998, 95 feet of snow fell on Mt. Baker, the most ever recorded in the world. That kind of superlative does not go unnoticed.
