embark From the Editor The Story Behind the Stories A Fitting Tribute # Our World War II veterans, members of the “Greatest Generation,” are leaving us at a sobering rate of 900–1,000 a day. In honor of those who served and to mark Veterans Day this month, we’ve devoted our cover story, “Silent Heroes,” to the veterans of both WWII and the Korean War. In this issue, you’ll see a firsthand report and photographs of a wonderful event, the Honor Flight. Since 2005, the Honor Flight Network has been flying WWII and Korean War veterans to Washington, D.C., where they are saluted, greeted, and provided with a tour of the military monuments and Arlington National Cemetery. To date, the network has flown nearly 70,000 veterans to the nation’s capital. We By Lance Elko sent a writer and photographer to a recent Honor Flight event hosted by US Airways. To get a sense of how much these Honor Flights mean to our veterans, see our story on page 50. A few hours south of D.C., one finds a different sort of patriotic venue: Colonial Williamsburg. Being a bit of a history buff, I’ve made four visits over the years. And each time, I’ve wondered how authentic the costumed interpreters were in their presentations of the crafts and trades of the time. Writer Janine Latus put my curiosity to rest with her fascinating behind-thescenes story, “Making It Real.” You can find that starting on page 42. Until next time around, enjoy your flight. And it’s that time of year to wish one and all Happy Holidays! COVER PHOTO BY MAX HIRSHFELD Follow us: @USAirwaysMag
