explore Adventure Time to Play A Test of Will Inside the crazy world of cyclocross. by brion o’Connor ★ photos by todd prekaski My first glimpse of a cyclocross race had me utterly baffled. Several mountain biking buddies and I gathered at Lynn Woods, just outside of Boston, for some fat-tire fun on a cool October day. At our favorite trailhead, we saw a pack of Lycra-clad cyclists running — not pedaling, but running — up a steep pitch with their bikes hoisted on their shoulders. It was also littered with strategically placed barriers that forced racers to perform the sport’s signature move — a dismount, followed by a short dash and a lightning-quick remount. The racers came chugging by, their faces both fierce and forlorn, in what one announcer called “the parade of pain.” Many racers wore what one spectator jokingly referred to as a snot mask. “Gives them that sexy, glazed-doughnut look,” he quipped.
