November is National Aviation History Month.
In just over 100 years, the industry has come
(or flown) a long way. by Tara Titcombe
That’s when Orville and Wilbur Wright made their
first successful flight — 120 feet in 12 seconds — in
Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Educating and Innovating
The Carolinas Aviation
Museum provides an
educational experience to
children of different age
groups. With interactive
exhibits and customized
tours, the museum works
to bring STEM (science,
and mathematics) education to life.
“We want kids to learn
about the history of these
planes,” McClamrock says.
“But we also want them to
interact with the exhibits.
For example, we have a
Cessna where they can sit
and learn the basic principles of flight. They can
also solve math equations
to map out a flight.”
Through education, the
museum hopes to engage
young visitors and spark
an interest in aviation.

would launch an industry that would change the
world. That first flight was the beginning not only
of airplanes and airlines, but also of space shuttles,
supersonic jets, drones, and more. A man has
walked on the moon. Another has broken the sound
barrier. And you can now fly anywhere in the world.
What better way to celebrate this month than a
trip to the state where it all began? The Carolinas
Aviation Museum is located right next to the runways of Charlotte Douglas International Airport in
