ver the summer, 35 high school students descended
on the PA College campus for a two-week Health

Care Careers Academy program. The program grew from
of the Lancaster County Community Foundation.
In conjunction with the Lancaster-Lebanon IU13, HACC's
Lancaster campus and the Lancaster County STEM Alliance,
PA College conducted the program to help prepare students
from the Lancaster, Manheim Central and Eastern Lancaster
school districts for future professional success in familysustaining careers.
Over the course of the program, students spent six hours on
campus each day learning about different career paths in health
care, participating in hands-on lessons about a variety of health
care and STEM (or "basic science") topics, and learning practical
skills in CPR and first aid. The students, who all began the
program as high school freshmen, will continue to return to the
campus for the next two summers, building on skills already

"Health care is facing a critical shortage of the professionals
needed to provide health services to our community," said PA
College President, Dr. Mary Grace Simcox. "Through a joint
effort of community leaders, the Health Care Careers Academy
exposes students to professional opportunities in health care,
mentors them throughout their high school years, and helps
prepare them for the rigors of college. In the end, students will be
appropriately prepared for success in family-sustaining careers,
and Lancaster County will have the talent pipeline it needs,
consisting of diverse, qualified professionals."

ASN Program NCLEX Report for
the 2016-2017 Exam Year
Upon graduation from
the Associates of Science
in Nursing Program,
graduates become
candidates for licensure
by successfully passing
the National Council
Licensure Examination
(NCLEX). The NCLEX is
a national exam designed
to test the knowledge,
skills and abilities
considered necessary to
practice nursing safely and
effectively at the entrylevel. For nursing schools
to retain accreditation,
the benchmark for first-

time test takes is 80%.
The ASN Program at
PA College is pleased to
announce the end-of-year
State Board NCLEX pass
rate of 95.16%.
Success is never
one person. This
accomplishment is the
result of the dedication
and mentoring by faculty
and staff members of
PA College and to our
students who work
diligently to achieve
their goals of becoming
a nurse.
