Lecture

n April, PA College hosted Dr.
Alice M. Rivlin, Senior Fellow at the
Brookings Institution, to discuss the
future of health care in the U.S. under
a new administration. Members of
the community gathered in the High
Auditorium for Dr. Rivlin's talk, followed
by an informative Q&A session. A
recording of the session can be found on
our YouTube channel, accessible from our
homepage at PAcollege.edu!

The Common Book is
Coming to PA College!

eginning this fall, PA College
will implement a Common Book
program, which will engage the College
Community in larger discussions about
relevant topics in health care. Those
interested in participating will read the
same book and engage in meaningful
dialogue around the book's themes and
content.

NATIONAL LIBRARY OF
MEDICINE EXHIBIT
SURVIVING AND THRIVING:
AIDS, POLITICS AND CULTURE
Monday, November 20,
and Friday, December 1
from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The purpose of a Common Book is
to build bridges between experiences
we share, no matter what our field of
scholarship or course of study. The
Common Book program will include
programming tied to the book's major
themes as well as to the National Library
of Medicine exhibit, "Surviving and
Thriving: AIDS, Politics and Culture." The
exhibit will be on display at PA College
this fall, and community members are
welcome to visit on Monday, November
20, and Friday, December 1, from 9
a.m. to 7 p.m. Additionally, writer and

filmmaker David France will join us for a
Distinguished Lecture on a related topic
on Thursday, November 30.
This year's Common Book, Abegail
Ntleko's memoir "Empty Hands,"
discusses social justice, race, gender,
access, education and more. Ntleko's
story retraces her struggle to overcome
poverty and become a nurse in a culture
not focused on educating girls. Sister
Abegail finds her voice as an advocate
and educator during apartheid and the
beginning of Africa's HIV/AIDS crisis.
Her story of perseverance in the face
of formidable odds is an inspiration to
readers.
