JUSTIN BECKER, PARAMEDIC '17
MEDICAL STUDENT

S

ince completing our Paramedic
program in August 2017, Justin
Becker has embarked on new journeys
both planned and utterly unexpected.
Aspiring to attend medical school
since his time as a bioengineering student at the University of
Pittsburgh, he also became interested in becoming a paramedic.
While applying to medical schools, and eager to continuing
learning, he realized the time was right to obtain this additional
training and enrolled in PA College. Justin thrived in the program
and credits this experience with teaching him to think outside the
box and remain calm in high-pressure situations.
When he was accepted into the medical program at the American
University of the Caribbean, Justin was both excited and a bit
disappointed that taking his next academic step would delay the
opportunity to utilize his paramedic skills. Little did he know that
his training would soon be essential. Six days after arriving in St.
Maarten in September 2017, Justin found himself in his school's
hurricane shelter, awaiting the impact of Category 5 Hurricane
Irma. Justin had quickly befriended those who were setting up a
makeshift hospital in the university's simulation center, and after
the storm hit, he jumped in to help. Justin utilized his medic skills
to assess patients, provide basic treatments and lead other student
helpers, while gaining first hand disaster response experience.
Four days later, Justin was among those evacuated by the US
military to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he met the Governor,
Ricardo Rosselló (pictured with Justin above).

Justin credits his paramedic
experiences with teaching
him to think outside the
box and to remain calm in
high-pressure situations.

U

pon graduation, Tina Ross always
pictured herself working in a
hospital, and that's where she began her
nursing career. After completing her
PA College ASN education, Tina spent
more than 10 years in nursing, working
in the med-surg, trauma step-down, ER, ICU and trauma-neuro
ICU clinical areas. Considering a future in medical school
or veterinary medicine, Tina advanced her education with a
bachelor's degree in biology, which broadened her perspective of
the health care arena and industries that impacted the field.
Building on her clinical background, Tina consulted for physician
practices and organizations, performing OSHA evaluations and
related trainings, managing full-service surgery center builds, and
developing and implementing quality improvement projects to
support physician organizations contracting with hospitals and
health plans.
Tina ventured into various start-up opportunities, including
contributing to building a full-service clinical management
department for a local health plan, designing and implementing
innovative programming for ACCESS Plus members, and most
recently working for a small health plan dedicated to Medicare
members. Working for a start-up means wearing a lot of hats,
so Tina has spent her days on tasks as varied as performing
authorizations, processing claims for medical necessity reviews
and handling member issues, to policy development, compliance
monitoring, program enhancements and staff development.
One of her greatest impacts was designing a Member Advocacy

After a short break, Justin settled back into his first semester
medical school courses, with time at the University of Central
Lancashire in England, before returning to St. Maarten this past
January. He continues working toward his goal of becoming an
emergency physician with specialized training in EMS. Justin is
grateful that his education at PA College proved to be so valuable
during a crisis, and that these recent experiences, both planned
and unexpected, reaffirmed that he's on the right path and loves
his work.
