CHECK-IN?
The first few weeks of nursing school
can be an overwhelming experience.
The Five Minute Check-in (nicknamed
"the Chicken") is a new approach by the
Division of Nursing to ease new student
stress. The Chicken connects students to
nursing faculty early in the program, so
that faculty can catch difficulties before
they become academic problems.
During the first four weeks of the
semester, new nursing students are invited
to spend five minutes with nursing faculty
volunteers. Students meet with faculty
each week. With each interaction, faculty
coach learners about how to be stronger
students. During the Chicken, faculty ask
students about study habits, organization,
upcoming assignments and sources of
stress. The faculty give students tips, and
together the faculty and students create
a plan for the next week. The faculty
also refer students to college services
like learner support, financial aid and
tutoring.

All of these strategies help smooth
students' transition to the nursing
program. The feedback from students
has been overwhelmingly positive. One
student commented, "The women that
helped me were a blessing. I had no
idea what I was doing and each week,
they gave me insight into what I should
be doing and how to do it. All in five
minutes." Another student stated, "I really
enjoyed the people that were asking the
questions and helping us. They all seemed
genuinely interested in our learning."
The Chicken has grown each semester.
The program had over 50 students
participate in the fall and over 90 students
check-in this spring semester. The faculty
volunteer numbers have also grown.
In the fall the program had five faculty
volunteers, the spring had 12, and for the
fall of 2018, 20 faculty have volunteered
to coach students! The Division of
Nursing plans to keep "chicken-ing" each
semester to help our students start out on
the right track!
