Tools to Cope
For all the field's many advances, challenges remain for
mental health nursing. "Getting enough providers is a challenge,"
MacKenzie says. "There are not enough psychiatrists or nurses
entering the field. Nurse practitioners for psychiatry are filling
a tremendous need."
While the public's growing acceptance of mental health
conditions as diseases is a critical stride, MacKenzie notes that
there is still a strong stigma attached to those suffering from
psychotic diseases and substance abuse.
When Katie King, BSN '15, MSN '19, hears a derogatory
word about someone who has a mental illness, she speaks up
immediately. "I don't let people call my patients 'crazy.' It's really
disrespectful," says King, who is a nurse manager at Lancaster
Behavioral Health Hospital. "I never let someone talk about my
patients like that."
For King, who spent a year in urgent care while waiting
for a mental health nursing position, the chance to change
lives is what drives her. "We treat chronic things that affect
a person's whole life and give them the tools to cope with it.
We're changing lives." n
