Katrina Fetter, Director of Nursing Professional Development
and Clinical Excellence at Penn Medicine Lancaster General
Health, has been named winner of the 2020 Distinguished
Alumni Award, which recognizes graduates whose professional
accomplishments, affiliations and career have honored the
legacy of excellence at PA College.
After originally pursuing veterinary technology, Fetter realized
she wanted more interaction with people, and so she pursued
a two-year program in nursing offered by PA
College (then Lancaster General Hospital
School of Nursing). She loved the hands-on labs
and mentorship from instructors, specifically
Nancy Kelly, Dee Minchhoff and Cheryl Grab.
After graduating in 2006, Fetter joined the
inpatient oncology unit at Lancaster General
Hospital.
"There was complexity and no two patients
were the same, but there was also so much
human interaction. It was fast-paced and at times intimidating,
but in a good way that challenged my nursing skills," she
says. "The unit staff felt like family and I thought it would
be a great place to start my career."
Later, she moved into a Nurse Manager Residency role
before serving as an Interim Manager. While completing a

post-master's Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist
(CNS) program, she worked as an oncology educator. She
then served as a CNS until June 2018, when she moved into
her current role.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented countless new
challenges. "While still performing my normal job duties,
I was asked to establish a telehealth call center to manage
results for positive patients with a re-deployed team of
COVID-19 nurses," she says. "We followed
patients through their illness, found resources
for them, and provided medical advice. This
morphed into a county-wide contact tracing
team just before Memorial Day."
Fetter has spoken at Oncology Nursing Society
Congresses, helped establish the Lancaster Red
Rose chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society,
and was selected to the National Quality
Campaign Team to improve patient outcomes
through physical activity. She received the Penn Medicine
Victoria L. Rich Transformational Leadership Award in 2017.
Fetter loves coaching and playing soccer, as well as spending
time with her husband, Chris, her children Daphne, 8 and
Miles, 11, and their dog Ziggy. n
