Byorick Family Endowed
Scholarship is Launched
An enduring commitment to Penn Medicine Lancaster
General Health and PA College is a shared family value
for F. Joseph Byorick and Susan Book Byorick '77,
parents to Andrea, Megan and Evan Byorick and former
spouses. Shortly after joining the hospital in 1972, Joe
encouraged Sue to pursue her nursing studies at the nowPA
College. After earning her diploma, Sue worked in
labor and delivery while pursuing her BSN at Millersville
University. She joined our nursing faculty and eventually
earned a master's degree in Mothers and Newborns at the
University of Delaware. Following a 15-year tenure with
LG Health, Sue served as Clinical Nurse Specialist
at May-Grant Associates, retiring in 2015.
In his nearly four-decade career with
LG Health, Joe managed all phases of
hospital accounting, reimbursement
and finance. Additionally, he was
involved in the acquisitions and
divesture of related organizations,
payer negotiations and financial
strategy development. Several years
before his retirement as CFO in
2020, he established the Byorick Family
Endowed Nursing Scholarship at PA College,
where he has also served as a trustee.
" My children and I want to honor Sue's career in OB/
GYN nursing through this scholarship, " shares Joe. " The
fund also reflects my profound gratitude for my long
career with LG Health and my belief in the importance of
giving back to the community. "
When Sue met the first Byorick Family Scholarship
recipient in April, she was thrilled to learn that Diana
Chavez '22 also aspired to work in OB/GYN nursing. Sue
was inspired by Diana's commitment to her studies, while
also working and raising a child - echoing Sue's own path
during many of her student years.
" While we can't help students with all of the challenges in
their lives, through this scholarship we hope to ease some
of their financial burden and help them succeed, "
explains Sue.

Andrea has worked for LG Health
since 2004, most recently as Director
of Analytics and Decision Support,
overseeing quality, patient safety and
strategic financial analytics and modeling.
After working for Twin Rose Family
Medicine, most recently as a Financial
Counselor, Megan transitioned to Lancaster
General Hospital in 2017. As Manager of Financial
Assistance, she works with individuals and families facing
barriers to fulfilling their health care needs. Andrea and
Megan are honored that their family can help support future
nurses through their scholarship fund.
" I've seen through my work and as a patient the need our
community has for talented and compassionate clinicians
who can support and advocate for their patients, " Andrea says.
Megan adds: " I look forward to observing the impact that
recipients of the Byorick Family Scholarship will have in our
community in the years to come. "
