The Pellucid Perspective - October 2016 - 15

THE LAST WORD

Tiger, Tiger burning out?

W

hile I undoubtedly watch more
of The Golf Channel's weekday
Tour coverage than the average
American, if any defense of that admission is necessary, I stipulate that I almost
never watch the entire telecast, and when
it's one of the lesser lights of the PGA
Tour schedule I sometimes don't watch
at all. I was, however, looking forward to
the coverage of the Tour's wraparound
season opener last week in Napa Valley,
California. As you've guessed, it wasn't
to see Phil Mickelson making a rare
early season appearance. Unless, that is,
if he was paired as rumored with Tiger
Woods. I, like thousands of viewers and a
reportedly substantial number of visitors
who had snapped up tournament tickets
and nearby accommodations with record
speed, was disappointed when El Tigre
backed out of the tournament only days
after officially committing to play and
triggering that rush of ticket and hotel
room purchases. All those folks weren't
coming to Napa for the wine, folks, although they may have spent more time
sampling the grape than they were planning to after they found themselves with
no Tiger to watch.
Speculation has obviously been rife
since Tiger's latest no-show as to what
his reasons may have been for canceling
both the Napa event and some silly event
he had committed to in Turkey. Why he
was planning to grace Turkey with his
presence is another question. I can only
guess that it might involve either a golf
course design deal or some more appearance money that he doesn't need. As to
his cancellation of both appearances, I
can likewise only speculate, but I wonder if perhaps the decision has less to do
with the state of his health and his game
than his reluctance to crawl back under
the microscope and subject himself to
the slings and arrows of the media, both
press and social varieties. I'm no psychologist, although my dad played one in real
life, but I'm guessing that Tiger has kind
of enjoyed the relative amount of privacy
he has experienced recently for the first

www.PellucidCorp.com

time in his adult life. Granted, every
time he pokes his nose out of his lavish bunker, some paparazzi member or
TMZ stringer is poised to pounce. Even
while basically keeping as low a profile as
it's possible for him to do in his role as an
assistant captain at the Ryder Cup, what
was the most widely distributed photo of
him in the wake of the U.S. victory? Yup,
that's right, a photo of Tiger, drink of
some sort in hand, smiling widely arm in
arm with Dustin Johnson's fiance Paulina
Gretzky at the Americans' victory party.
Nothing wrong with that at all, but if
you don't think the photo received such
wide distribution because of its inherent but unspoken salacious wink-wink
overtones, you weren't paying attention
when all those reports of Tiger and Jason Dufner's decidedly un-shy now exwife were going around. I know Tiger
was groomed to sign up for this virtually
from birth, but he has to be getting really tired of it. And, if the irritation isn't
being soothed regularly by tournament
victories, pursuit of Jack's majors record
and mega-million dollar endorsement
deals (and those days may well be over,
or rare), why spend every day staring
into a sea of cameras, microphones and
reporters and once again providing grist
for the social media trolls?
While it wasn't my intention, the
mention of Dustin Johnson and Jason
Dufner's names leads me into another
direction. Following his first Major and
an overall superb season, Johnson is the
reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year.
Dufner, not so much, although he is
constantly labeled one of the Tour's best
ball-strikers by the TV talking heads
and had a decent financial year (on the
course, anyway) in 2016. The reason I
have linked the two together is that invariably, when either is in contention or
finds himself in one of the featured TV
groups, one or both of the commentators
will follow up a birdie or great shot with a
sarcastic "Yeah, he looks thrilled, doesn't
he?" or "Gosh, look, he can hardly contain himself." The point being that both

conduct themselves on the course as if it
were a 2-shot penalty to smile or express
any emotion one way or the other.
Now, I'm not suggesting that I would
prefer to see, or the game would be better off, if more Tour players emulated the
talented but famously volcanic Tommy
Bolt, snapping clubs and screaming obscenities over the bad shots or unlucky
breaks that plague even the world's best
players. On the other hand, it doesn't disturb me unduly to see Rory McIlroy toss
an offending club into a lake occasionally, or see and hear Jordan Spieth express
his displeasure to himself and his caddie
over a poor shot or even what he considers to be a poorly designed golf hole. On
the other hand, I do enjoy seeing Tour
players high-fiving everyone in sight or
fist-pumping after a great shot or a key
holed putt. While we know those moments mean bigger bank accounts for
them, and also that their exuberance is
exaggerated by the tension and fear of
failure that accompanies playing golf for
a living, it's nice to see them having fun,
at least until the next bad shot.
And after all, isn't that a better message to convey to those millions of TV
viewers who are only occasional players,
or are among those many more shadowy
millions of "latent" golfers that the NGF
continues to tell us about? One of the key
characteristics of golf 's mostly missing
Millennial generation is that they like to
have fun. How much fun does it look like
Dustin Johnson is having on the course,
despite being one of the best players on
the planet? When Jason Dufner holes a
chip shot and celebrates that feat with
a face only a stone sculptor could love,
where's the joy in that? All of us, avid
golfers or not, can identify with the pain
of a slice into the water, chili-dipped approach shot or lipped out 2-foot putt,
but if there aren't some moments of unfettered joy accompanying the occasional
great shot, what's the point? How many
will sign up for the athletic equivalent
of a root canal if there's no relief somewhere along the line?
