New internet privacy rules - same
as the old rules

There may be opportunities amidst the chaos for course operators

wo things happened in March - the "privacy rules" governing internet usage enacted by Executive Order in
2016 were repealed and my email address was hijacked.
Both of those events are related and serve as a warning to all of
us who use the internet. It also helps to accept the fact that trying to control all the ways your data is used is effectively playing
against a stacked deck. And every time you think you have a
tech deck counted out, the house shuffles the cards and/or a
new vendor changes the game.
It also helps to understand that the growth of the internet is
based on a "quid pro quo" exchange of "free" and "paid" content,
goods and services. Much of the consumer "quid" is invisible
value contained in browser history royalties, advertising, payper-click and remarketing revenues that are exchanged between
Internet Service Providers (fixed line and wireless mobile ISPs),
search engine platforms and e-commerce vendors. The major
currency for these invisible exchanges is essentially consumer
identification and tracking data.

The biggest change was to be in "permissions" that were supposed to help protect the consumer. In reality, the net effect
of the repeal is zero - the new rules never took effect. The real
impact of the repeal enables wireless ISPs to sell consumer data
under the same rules that have previously been granted to fixed
line ISPs and level the technology playing field for the multitude of players interested providing internet services ranging
from basic internet access to selling razor blades. It was also
necessary to address the changing nature of internet access between fixed line and wireless broadband. The 2016 rules would
have effectively created different standards and distinctions that
have become effectively meaningless - between smartphones,
tablets, wireless enabled laptops and big acquisitions, the lines
of distinction are getting blurred beyond recognition anyway.
If I log on to the internet on my fixed line cable connection, my cable provider provides my location (IP address) to
Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Mozilla Firefox, depending on which browser I use. If I log on using my mobile hot
