his issue finds me just back from the GIS/GBC annual trade show and educational sessions in San Antonio
where I had an invitation from the NGCOA to speak to
a group of multi-course operators on 3 topics:

I structured it like a mini-TED talk except we didn't talk
about Technology, Entertainment and Design (the original acronym but as most of you know, they're way beyond those fields
now). I termed mine the thoughtful, engaging dialogue or "ted"
(little letters) and we had some fun with the format and the
relatively informal atmosphere of roughly 50 folks participating
(vs. an auditorium full).
Given space constraints here and the fact that you're reading
vs. dialoguing, I'm going to devote my limited space to the first
point regarding how technology is changing as it relates to per-

formance analysis. I'll include insights into your results that will
take a significant leap as PoS and Tee Sheet systems that are native to the cloud (Chronogolf, ForeUp, TeeSnap etc.) or are migrating to the cloud (Club Prophet and others) mature. I suggested to the MCO audience that the currently little-heralded
acronym of API would be one of the catalysts that takes them
there and asked how many knew what it was. A few hands went
up and we were off and running.
What the heck is an API? Let's go to Wikipedia for the
basic definition in layman's terms:
In computer programming, an application programming interface (API) is a set of subroutine definitions, protocols, and
tools for building application software. ... A good API makes
it easier to develop a computer program by providing all the
building blocks, which are then put together by the programmer.
In more practical, business or user-needs terms, it's an efficient way to integrate information from multiple sources (or
software systems) into a single report that provides an insight
you couldn't get from either system independently. I'm a practical guy at heart so let's translate that into 3 concrete examples:
