GOLF COURSE
OPERATIONS
Just as we thought we were out of the woods, the drought hit
in 2011. 2017 was our first year to be able to water the whole
golf course."
The Academy, named for famed local labor leader Mario
De La Torre, opened three years ago, and Hsieh soon created
a series of projects for trainees to begin to overcome 30 years
of deferred maintenance. Brett Hochstein, formerly with Tom
Doak's Renaissance course design firm, put together a plan to
renovate trees and bunkers and create a layout for concrete
cart paths.
In addition to upgrading the golf course conditioning and

hosting a number of outings to benefit the neighborhood,
Hsieh has welcomed non-traditional golf-themed activities
such as FootGolf and Disc Golf.
"We're trying everything," Hsieh said. "The FootGolf
course we built was on a hill so it's kind of hard for the soccer ball, so that's not a huge revenue generator for us. I will
say, though, that we designed a world class Disc Golf course.
We've been added to the Disc Golf World Tour in May for
the San Francisco region. The Disc Golf is $22 for 18 holes
($25.50 on weekends), and probably accounts for five or six
percent of our rounds. And so far, no conflicts with golfers."
Hsieh never imagined that he
would have a job skills training academy on his course, but as a long time
San Francisco resident, he enumerated
several reasons why the program works
for him and for Gleneagles.
"First, I'm a San Franciscan and I
wanted to do something to help my
city," Hsieh said. "Two, for a long time,
our location was less desirable, being
up against a public housing project.
When we came up with the Academy concept, it was one of the reasons
why the location of Gleneagles turned
around and became one of our strongest points. And three, we've had some
community golf events which support
lifting up the neighborhood. We just
had one with 65 people, just for that
reason."
The program is administered by
volunteers, and the curriculum is developed with local building trade
union input. Students graduate to an
8-week apprenticeship program and
upon completion, become Laborers
in a local building trade union. During their time at Gleneagles, they learn
how to rake bunkers, trap gophers, are
introduced to arbor, asphalt and course
mowing techniques, and assist with
concrete programs such as cart paths
and maintenance area wash pads.
Hsieh is well aware that the odds
are somewhat stacked against a 9-hole
course in a tough neighborhood and
a challenging time for golf in general,
but if Gleneagles doesn't make it, it
won't be for Hsieh's lack of trying. In
the meantime, he knows some good is
coming out of the course.
"I didn't get into the golf business
to change lives or improve lives," Hsieh
said, "but that's what this program
does."
