August Posts a
Modest Decline
A
fter several months of neutral weather vs. year-ago, August
weather registered a decline as Golf Playable Hours
(GPH) were down 5% vs. Year-Ago (YA). That dragged
the Year-to-Date (YtD) GPH figure down to -1% vs. YA. Regional
breadth also swung to the negative for the year at 1:2 with
9 favorable regions vs. 20 unfavorables rounded out by 16 in the
neutral zone (+/- 2%). You can get that full picture monthly one

humidity which triggered the Heat Index rule of our playable
hours formula while other areas (obviously not the West) had
higher-than-normal precip for the month (not counting Ida
which also got, literally, dumped into the final days of August
for the impacted areas). On the rounds and Utilization front, I
had projected in my crystal ball that we'd be down 10% for the
month so the -4% result was half the hit I had anticipated. Due
to the diligence of our Golf Market Research Center Charter
Members, we've already seen the preview of the August results
for rounds and revenue and, while the rounds gap to last year
is increasing, it's again not quite as steep as I had projected and
we're seeing Rate and % Discount hold their own so basically
August Golf Revenue declines are just the result of the unfavorable
rounds comparison. "
