personality for a whole new generation of kids and young
adults. He also moved the needle on equipment sales and
TV ratings which are not bad things. Left behind however
in Tiger-mania were the individual course owner/operators
who didn't benefit from any significant surge in either participants
or rounds (one could argue that '97-'01 saw growth in
participants but the industry wasn't tracking facility-reported
rounds back then and this was pre-Pellucid as the industry
conscience). Building the case for the COVID effect, going
back up to our Public, Regulation-length facility universe and
the $2.7B increment from '20-'21, let's also consider that this
universe of facilities comprises ~60% of the total and the fact
that Golf Revenue generally runs about 60% of facility Total
Revenue. If we wanted to speculate on a Total Facilities/Total
Revenue projection, that number would be between $7-8B
of incremental Revenue to the golf operations sector of the
industry.
I'm sure there are folks in the allied industry associations
and their perennial research partner, SRI, who are
already salivating on how even that number could be used in a
multiplier to push golf's economic impact from the last figure
of ~$84B to over $100B. While I'm equally sure that it will be
overstated yet again, the above datapoints outline that there's
tangible and quantifiable support that, at least in this latest
round of hyperbolic enthusiasm, the owner/operators are participating
in the party.
